Holiday-themed Activities Light up the Reston Town Center

Posted on November 26, 2013 by The Avant at Reston Town Center

The air is crisper, the days are shorter and those leaves are falling, which can only mean one thing: the holidays are upon us. Fortunately for you, The Avant’s prime location in the Reston Town Center means you’ll be able to celebrate just outside your door. The Town Center is brimming with events to celebrate the upcoming festive season.

Reston Town Center Hiliday Parade 2006

Every Friday starting in November until March, the Town Center invites visitors to lace up their ice skates and make a few laps around the rink. From 8 to 10 p.m. kids and adults alike can enjoy a live DJ, games and prizes. Get some exercise in while you have fun too.

From 10:45 a.m. until noon on November 23, an ice skating show celebrating winter fun and fitness kicks off the holiday season. This event will feature performances by area figure skaters and synchronized skating teams, and an on-ice fashion show hosted by athletic clothing retailer Athleta. This event is free and open to the public.

On November 29, Reston Town Center guests will be in for a real treat. The stores open at 8 a.m. so adults can get their holiday shopping in early, and kids can start ice skating on the pavilion or participate in the Gingerbread Man Mile run. The place will really light up for the annual Reston Holiday Parade. Be prepared to see holiday lights, antique cars, dancers, and community groups welcome the arrival of Mr. Claus. At 12:30 p.m., kids can visit and take pictures with Santa. That evening at 6 p.m., a sing along and tree lighting will commence. To finish the night off, consider taking a horse drawn carriage ride. It’s $5 a person and children 5 and younger ride free. Best of all, all the proceeds from the rides benefit Volunteer Fairfax.

To ensure that you don’t miss out on any of the holiday hoopla, check Reston Town Center’s event calendar for the up-to-the-minute information. You also can visit the Town Center’s special holiday events website at http://restontowncenter.com/holidays/holidays.html.

Middleburg, Virginia: A Country-Chic Destination

Posted on November 22, 2013 by The Avant at Reston Town Center

With its lush pastoral views and sprawling greenery, Middleburg, Virginia, is a true country getaway. About 40 minutes from The Avant in Reston, this is where Northern Virginia residents go to remind themselves of a quieter life. But city dwellers shouldn’t despair, there’s plenty to see and enjoy in Middleburg.

Middleburg, VA resort | Salamander Inn

If you want to experience the horse country that Middleburg’s famous for, why not take a polo lesson? After all, the royals all play it! Take a lesson, ride on the outdoor trails or just watch a match at Middleburg Polo Academy.

All that horseback riding will leave you hungry, so consider going to the Goodstone Inn & Restaurant for refined French food. Enjoy escargot, salmon trios and mushroom crepes to start with and dig into salads including classic Caesar and Roquefort next. Feast on hearty entrees like risotto, scallops, lamb, salmon and crab cakes. To accompany your meal, you may want to consider ordering a glass of wine from the 400 different international types they have in stock.

If you’d prefer a more laid-back dining experience, head to Market Salamander. Here you can order a variety of to-go sandwiches like ham and cheese or crispy chicken BLTs. From this market, you’ll want to head to the Salamander Resort & Spa. This luxury property opened in August and features a full-service spa, an equestrian facility and a handful of restaurants. If you’d like to relax, book a treatment at the spa—they offer everything from 30-minutes massages to a couple’s delight package where you’ll receive treatments in a suite complete with a private courtyard and outdoor hot tub. Or you could wander around and admire the lush, picture-perfect land that the resort occupies.

If you’re looking for a sweet way to cap off your trip, pay a visit Popcorn Monkey. This quirky and colorful shop sells popcorn that comes in flavors like blueberry and green apple in addition to savory bites like blue cheese and buffalo wing.

Long after you’ve returned, you can rest assured that a taste of refined countryside is just a short drive away.
